Xabi Alonso ‘contract clause’ explained after claims he could join Liverpool

Xabi Alonso’s demands for a contract to join Liverpool have been rejected but there are suggestions a less formal ‘deal’ is in the works.

Last month, it was reported that the Bayer Leverkusen manager was open to moves to Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Sport BILD revealed that the former midfielder could move to his three previous clubs if he extends his second year in the Bundesliga, but the latest offer seems to suggest otherwise.

Sports writer Ben Jacobs tweeted that while Leverkusen CEO Fernando Caro has denied reports that Alonso’s contract has such a clause, the club will not stand in his way if the right opportunity presents itself. When asked if there was a clause in the contract, Jacobs said, “No,” Caro said.

But no clause is necessary. We have a very good relationship with Xavi and he knows we are a serious club. “At the end of the day, we don’t force someone to stay if they don’t want to stay. We want them to be happy and feel good with us. They really want to stay, and that’s our goal. “There is nothing on paper [for Xavi to go to his former club], but sometimes a contract that is not on paper can be a contract.

If we have to do this in the future, I know we can talk to each other. I hope we don’t have to do that because he will be happy to stay at Leverkusen. There doesn’t seem to be anything written that would trigger Alonso’s quick exit, but Leverkusen don’t seem to want to let him go without a fight.

Jurgen Klopp was the last manager to win the Bundesliga Cup with Bayern Munich, winning back-to-back titles in 2010/11 and 2011/12.

Alonso will now be looking to repeat the feat a decade on, but the start of his impressive efforts has certainly caught the eye of some of Europe’s top clubs.

The Spaniard made 210 appearances in five seasons for Manchester United before finally moving to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009.Having won a World Cup and two European Championships with his country, as well as numerous club honours, Alonso already looks on his way to an equally successful managerial career.
