What Dominik Szoboszlai said to Erling Haaland prior to Liverpool move ahead of Man City clash

Former RB Salzburg teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Erling Haaland lock horns on Saturday when Liverpool travel to Manchester City.

The pair enjoyed a successful stint in Austria with the Bundesliga giants before they went their separate ways. Haaland’s career so far has seen him turn out for Borussia Dortmund prior to his Premier League switch to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Szoboszlai followed the well-trodden path from Salzburg to Leipzig, where he scooped back-to-back DFB Pokal winners’ medals in the German top-flight before his summer move to Anfield.

Saturday’s showdown at the Etihad Stadium will not be the first meeting between the duo since they went their separate ways, having gone toe-to-toe when Leipzig faced Dortmund and City – in the Champions League.

Speaking after the Merseyside derby win over Everton, Szoboszlai detailed his relationship with the Norwegian – and believes if the pair lined up alongside each other now it would be a different story.

“We got really close because we were both young, we had to learn so many things and we had to grow up because we were still boys,” he told Football Focus. “If we would play together now, it would be another situation – I think it would be quite good.”

Szoboszlai became Liverpool’s second summer signing, following the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister. Ahead of the move being confirmed, the Hungarian shared a sneaky snap of the Reds kit with his former teammate.

The 23-year-old revealed: “We spoke (before). Before it was official, I sent him a picture with the Liverpool shirt and he was like: ‘What is happening?’ and I say, ‘we’re going to see eachother’ and he said: ‘Congratulations, the Premier League is crazy’.

“He has the house and then two houses between us, I faced him when I played in Leipzig, great player, great guy so yeah.”
