There were several controversial calls against the Panthers during the Green Bay Packers-Carolina Panthers game on Sunday afternoon. The first questionable call came on a Romeo Dubs fly ball late in the fourth quarter. The Packers receiver caught a 36-yard pass on third-and-four but appeared to lose control on his way to the ground. The Panthers appealed the call, but the on-field decision was not overturned and the Dubs won a walkover. Green Bay recorded the game-winning drive as the Packers won 33-30.
NFL Senior Vice President of State Affairs Walt Anderson spoke to reporters poolside about the game after the game.”Clearly a statement on the ground is where we start. “It was a catch, and the receiver maintained control while he was down,” Anderson said, per Ian Rapoport .”I saw the ball hit the ground, but I also saw him holding it in his left hand. The left hand did not come off the ball and there was no possible shot to indicate that the left hand lost control of the ball. … “Since on-site judging was done, we stuck to on-site judging.”Another controversial play occurred in the final minutes of the game. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young tried to fumble the ball with one second on the clock, but Young was ruled not to have completed the snap in time. Instead, the game was cancelled. Anderson said the Panthers got the snap on time, but the clock ran out once the ball hit the ground.
“They dominated the ball on the clock, but when the ball hit the ground it was zero,” Anderson said. “They asked us if we could confirm that the clock was actually at zero. So it was 0 when it hit the ground. “We were able to confirm this with the production team,” he said.Had the Panthers gotten the ball in time, they would have had a chance to score as time expired. Instead, Carolina fell to 2-13 with the loss.
