The Washington Commanders have a new general manager and he has plenty of Super Bowl experience. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chiefs will hire San Francisco 49ers GM Adam Peters for a key role in the front office.
Peters has Super Bowl-winning experience in the front offices of the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos and spent the last three seasons with the 49ers as an assistant under John Lynch, helping build one of the best teams in the league.
Peters was previously a member of the Broncos’ personnel department and director of college scouting, recruiting 27 players who were part of the Super Bowl-winning team in the 2015 season. He was an assistant scout and had professional scouting duties from the 2003 to 2008 seasons, when the Patriots won two Super Bowls.
His experience helping build Super Bowl contenders in New England, Denver and San Francisco made him one of the hottest prospects on the GM market, and he was also considered a favorite for the Los Angeles Chargers jobs and the Las Vegas Raiders. It’s a midseason win for the Chiefs and their new ownership group led by Josh Harris. Washington has been mired in mediocrity for decades, winning three playoff games since its 1991 Super Bowl final victory. The franchise also made the playoffs seven times in those 32 seasons.
The Chiefs, who won just four games in 2023, need an overhaul, and Peters will have plenty of opportunities to do so in a big way. The Chiefs have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and should be in prime position to land one of the top quarterbacks in the class (USC’s Caleb Williams or North Carolina’s Drake Maye).
Washington has a total of nine picks, including two each in the second and third rounds. Not only would it give them five top-100 picks in the draft, but they would also have the most salary cap space in the NFL during the offseason. This gives Peters a lot of flexibility and opportunities to get creative as he tries to rebuild the Commanders organization.
