Bill O’Brien left the New England Patriots to spread his wings in the college game. That journey could eventually culminate in an Eagles head coaching job.
According to multiple reports, O’Brien is among the candidates to take over Boston College football after Jeff Hafley accepted a pro offer from the Green Bay Packers. O’Brien served as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach last season, his second stint in Foxborough after serving in various roles for five seasons (2007-2011). He transferred to Ohio State after a strong comeback with the Patriots, marking the end of the Mack Jones era amid many offensive shortcomings.
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman labeled O’Brien a “wild card option” when news of his hiring broke, and on Saturday, Kevin J.Stone of the New England Football Journal said the mutual interest between O’Brien and Chestnut Hill was “absolutely genuine”.”To hear O’Brien clearly wants the job, BC wants him to get the job,” Stone wrote in a follow-up article. “(They) have to agree on terms and money at this point.”O’Brien is practically synonymous with New England football. Born and raised in Boston (Dorchester, to be exact) and attended St. Petersburg to Danvers. O’Brien, a graduate of St. John’s Preparatory School, previously began his coaching career at Brown. Quarterback and linebacker.
O’Brien also has head coaching experience at Penn State University (2012-2013) and the Houston Texans (2014-2020), where he compiled a 69-61 record and made four NFL postseason appearances.BC Football went 21-26 in four seasons under Hafley, the Packers’ defensive coordinator.
As the Eagles rebounded from 1-3 last season to go 7-6, that campaign ended in the Fenway Bowl, ironically the showcase at Fenway Park. In the shadow of the green monster, no. The 23-14 win over No. 24 Southern Methodist was BC’s first bowl win since 2016.
