The Pittsburgh Steelers are officially interviewing Tom Art for what KPRC2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson describes as a transition game role. This means that the game coordinator will be handed over. Or will Art add something new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith doesn’t, though the team would at least be open to him joining the staff for that title? First, let’s take a quick look at art history.
He spent three seasons as the head coach at Akron from 2019 to 2021, and the Zips won just three games. However, he eventually joined the Chargers with a deep connection from his coaching days with former Chargers coach Brandon Staley at John Carroll. Art was Peyton Manning’s backup for three seasons in Indianapolis, but began his coaching career at his alma mater, John Carroll, in 2010.
He would become the head coach there in 2013 and leave for Chattanooga after the 2016 season.Granted, the Chargers haven’t had a particularly dynamic or explosive offense, even under Justin Herbert. But Arth’s scheme is very different from what Smith does in his natural passing game, so that may be something the team can work on together.
First and foremost, the Smith is a natural 12 swing, tight and heavy for compact carving. Can you guess what Arta will do? Spread them out. It is a style of football played with 11 players. If the film has a major criticism of Smith, it is that it is heavily influenced by the most popular concepts of football. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but attackers clearly like to get into the pocket and if you fall behind, things get dangerous. While at Akron, Art used looks and formations common to Smith and other offenses such as layups and boss sets to generate traffic.
But beyond that, he has a different route tree for running backs on offense. Guys like Jaylen Warren and Naji Harris seem to have been undiscovered yet, and Austin Ekeler has seen a lot of Art’s impact in the offensive committee for the game plan. Ironically, they try to solve the biggest weakness of Smith’s plan with diametrically opposed ideas. I’m still not sure if art is the answer. Despite the above, the murders he ordered were not particularly dynamic or elitist. But the different positions with Smith speak to the Steelers’ desire to spread some level of the weapon, offensive style. Either way, they look very different, but there could be a bridge between Tennessee and Atlanta’s plans for Smith with more of a drop-style passing game if they go that route. However, even with Arta involved, expect plenty of action in the middle of Smith’s offense, but shows they want to add another way to the passing game and offense.
This is a good sign for the team. This is especially true in games where the game you are running may not progress. Art’s resume is relevant because it is very different from Smith’s. However, he hasn’t had much success since he was at the FCS level.
