Steelers coach update: Pittsburgh lost two prospects. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ assistant coach search has been a week in the making since Arthur Smith became the team’s offensive coordinator, and news has emerged in recent days as the team and candidates begin searching for a new landing spot.
So where is Pittsburgh in the market to fill an assistant coaching vacancy? Ronald Curry on the boardFormer Saints running backs coach and quarterbacks coordinator Ronald Curry is off the market. He joins the Buffalo Bills as the team’s new quarterbacks coach and turned down an offer from the Saints to stay on as receivers coach. Jerry Dulak announced Tuesday that the team will hold interviews for a fourth quarterbacks coach, and while that doesn’t mean Mike Sullivan is gone, it does mean his replacement is up in the air.
The team also interviewed for the playmaking coordinator position. If you want to connect with a current Steelers employee, there are quite a few. Curry and Mike Tomlin are both from Hampton, Virginia. They share a common heritage, so their connection is clear. Curry and Smith played together at North Carolina in 2001. Director of pro scouting Sheldon White eventually became vice president of pro personnel in 2009 when Curry played with the Lions. It’s only three touches, but they’re big, important touches that could get Curry a chance to interview with the team. Either way, he goes to the Bills.”Don’t Hold Your Breath” by Hines Ward.Frisman, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ receivers coach, replaced Jackson, and the most talked about candidate for the job is former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward.
He started with Pittsburgh in 2017, but spent two years as an offensive assistant with the New York Jets from 2019 to 2020 before being hired as the receivers coach at Florida Atlantic. Ward spent one season as the head coach of the San Antonio Brahmas before being fired this winter. However, Jerry Dulak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette joined the Chipped Ham and Football podcast and told fans he’s a little optimistic about the proposal.”I’m telling you, Brian, and I’m telling everyone else: don’t hold your breath.” Dulac said. “Hines Ward came in a couple of years ago … and helped the receivers get to the middle, the second part of the season.
He became interested in the wide receiver job when Darryl Drake took over. I guess Heinz didn’t like the way he was passed over for a regular job after helping him by throwing his hat in the ring. That said, Ward doesn’t have the flashy coaching credentials that make him the favorite for the job. All he has is a connection between the organization and what Smith’s offense wants to be. Ward is a man with an old-fashioned, ruthless mentality who can add one of his most important qualities to the room that needs him most. It’s a feather in Ward’s cap to know how the team looked during his last period of dominance. But in the end, it might not be able to land.Coach Colts Land EaglesThe Indianapolis Colts have their own running back.
They hired former Philadelphia Eagles coach Alex Tunney, but he was fired. He will once again join Shane Steichen to bolster the Colts offense. Brian Johnson, the fired offensive coordinator, remains on the board because he hasn’t been hired yet, but Tunney is headed elsewhere. The Steelers are reportedly looking for a suitable coach for their running back coordinator. However, it is unclear whether this is a separate title or intended to be combined with the position of coach. It appears that both a wide receivers coach and a running backs coach could be up in the air.
