
The former Pittsburgh Steelers captain, standout quarterback and Super Bowl champion is set to start a new job this week with the Detroit Lions.
Former Steelers quarterback Deshea Townsend will join the Detroit Lions as the new defensive pass coordinator, according to a report from Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz.
He served in that role as cornerbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars the past two seasons.The #Lions have hired Deshea Townsend as their new playmaking coordinator, sources tell @BleacherReport .
Townsend, a two-time Super Bowl winner with Pittsburgh, previously played for the #Jaguars, a former fourth-round pick out of Alabama, played 12 of 13 NFL seasons with the Steelers, starting 80 of the 183 games he played and winning two Super Bowls along the way.
During his time in Pittsburgh, he recorded 460 tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks while adding 112 passes defended, 21 interceptions and three tackles on defense.As a coach, Townsend began as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2011.
He was the cornerbacks coach at Mississippi State from 2013 to 2015 before transferring to college and returning to the NFL. Prior to joining the Jaguars, Townsend served as the defensive backs coach for the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants and Chicago Bears.
