Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has announced a sweeping organizational rebuild but has made the decision to retain head coach Kevin Stefanski. In a press conference on Friday, Haslam outlined the future of the franchise, confirming major changes while emphasizing his faith in Stefanski’s leadership despite the team’s struggles this season.
“This season has not met our expectations, but we believe Kevin is still the right person to lead this team,” Haslam said. “He has shown the ability to adapt, and with the right support, I am confident he can guide us through this rebuild.”
### **Deshaun Watson’s Role in the Rebuild**
Haslam also doubled down on his commitment to quarterback Deshaun Watson, calling him a “franchise cornerstone” despite a rocky season. Watson’s record-breaking $230 million guaranteed contract, coupled with inconsistent on-field performance, has drawn criticism, but Haslam expressed optimism about Watson’s potential.
“Deshaun has faced challenges this year, but we are confident he will thrive as we build a more competitive roster around him,” Haslam explained.
### **Andrew Berry’s Status**
General manager Andrew Berry will remain part of the organization and play a pivotal role in reshaping the roster. Haslam acknowledged Berry’s track record for talent acquisition while making it clear that the pressure is on to deliver results.
“Andrew has a sharp eye for talent, and we’re counting on him to make the tough decisions that will move this team forward,” said Haslam.
### **Faith in Stefanski’s Leadership**
Stefanski, who led the Browns to a playoff win in 2020, has faced scrutiny due to inconsistent results in recent seasons. However, Haslam stressed the importance of stability in the head coaching role as the team navigates its rebuild.
“Changing coaches every few years hasn’t worked for this franchise,” Haslam admitted. “Kevin knows this team, and we trust him to get us back to the playoffs.”
The Browns’ rebuild will focus on retooling key positions, strengthening the offensive line, and addressing defensive lapses that have plagued the team throughout the season. Haslam’s decisions suggest a commitment to continuity while making strategic changes to reinvigorate the franchise.
