Detroit Lions veteran offensive lineman Taylor Decker recently shared a chilling account of a life-threatening injury he endured during the offseason, shedding light on the physical toll NFL players endure beyond the game.
In an emotional interview, Decker revealed that he suffered a freak injury during a workout session that resulted in internal bleeding and required emergency surgery. “It started as just another training day, but something didn’t feel right. I started feeling lightheaded and noticed swelling in my abdomen,” Decker explained. “By the time I got to the hospital, they told me I was lucky to be alive.”
The injury, caused by a ruptured blood vessel near his kidney, required immediate intervention and weeks of recovery. Decker credited the Lions’ medical team and his family for helping him through the ordeal. “I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the quick action of those around me,” he said.
The veteran lineman also described how the experience gave him a new perspective on life and football. “When you come that close to not making it, it changes how you approach everything—your career, your relationships, your health. I’m grateful to be here, grateful to play this game.”
Teammate Jared Goff praised Decker’s courage in sharing his story, saying, “It shows the resilience Taylor brings to this team. He’s not just a great player but an incredible person.”
Decker has since made a full recovery and continues to be a key leader for the Lions, inspiring teammates and fans with his determination to overcome life’s toughest challenges.
