Kansas City, MO – The NFL is facing backlash after Kansas City Chiefs defender Chris Johnson was fined $25,000 for a controversial hit on Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett during Sunday’s game. The incident, which left Garrett momentarily clutching his eye, was shockingly ignored by officials on the field, sparking outrage from fans, players, and analysts.
The hit occurred late in the second quarter as Garrett charged the Chiefs’ offensive line. Johnson’s forearm appeared to strike Garrett’s face mask, causing his hand to connect with his own eye. Although Garrett remained in the game, he later described the hit as “unnecessary and reckless.”
Social media erupted with criticism after video replays showed the severity of the impact. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski called the lack of a penalty “unacceptable,” while Garrett expressed frustration at the league’s inconsistent officiating.
“This isn’t about the fine—it’s about player safety,” Garrett told reporters. “If the league is serious about protecting us, this can’t be overlooked during games.”
The NFL defended its decision to impose a fine but declined to comment on why officials missed the call. Many are now questioning whether the league needs to revisit its on-field enforcement protocols to prevent similar oversights in the future.
The Browns, currently in the thick of the AFC playoff race, are hoping the incident doesn’t impact Garrett’s performance going forward. He is scheduled to undergo precautionary tests this week to assess potential damage to his eye.
As debates rage on about fairness and safety in the league, the Chiefs and Browns are preparing for critical matchups in the final weeks of the regular season.
