The Pittsburgh Steelers are approaching a critical crossroads, with the AFC North slipping away and their playoff hopes fading. It may be time to consider a change at quarterback.
Just three weeks ago, Russell Wilson led the Steelers to a victory over the Cleveland Browns, sparking optimism and even talk of his potential MVP candidacy. He threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns without top receiver George Pickens, who was sidelined with a hamstring injury.
However, since then, Wilson has thrown just three touchdowns, two interceptions, and lost a fumble, leading to growing doubts about his ability to lead the team. When the Steelers made the decision to start Wilson this season, it was expected to signal the end of Justin Fields’ chances to play. Fields’ role would only be reconsidered if the Steelers were in danger of missing the playoffs and Wilson’s performance was clearly the issue. While Pittsburgh secured a playoff spot early, their chances of winning a postseason game now seem slim, largely due to Wilson’s struggles.
While Wilson isn’t the only issue for the Steelers—weakening defense, a stagnant running game behind a poor offensive line, and ineffective coaching are all factors—his recent performances have undermined any momentum the team could have built. A quarterback’s job is to sustain a team’s progress, but Wilson has done the opposite, stalling the offense and squandering opportunities.
If the Steelers want to revive their playoff aspirations, they may need to give Fields another chance, as he still remains part of the game plan due to his potential to spark the offense. If not, they may be heading into the final week with a quarterback who is costing them games.
