Cleveland’s Offseason Drama Deepens: Browns To Lose Another Coach to the Patriots

The Cleveland Browns are at risk of losing a key member of their coaching staff following the news of Mike Vrabel’s appointment as the head coach of the New England Patriots. Browns insider Tony Grossi has raised concerns that Vrabel might seek to bring Browns special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone to his new staff in Foxborough.

Bubba Ventrone, who has served as the Browns’ special teams coordinator for the past two seasons, is widely regarded as one of the top special teams coaches in the NFL. His tenure in Cleveland has been notable for significant improvement in the unit, although there were challenges this season, particularly with inconsistent performance at the kicker position.

Grossi noted that Vrabel and Ventrone share a history, having been teammates during their playing days with the New England Patriots. Additionally, they worked together this past season in Cleveland, strengthening their professional relationship. Vrabel could view Ventrone as an invaluable addition to his staff, given their shared experience and Ventrone’s reputation in the league.

Some Browns fans have expressed frustration over the team’s decision to retain head coach Kevin Stefanski rather than pursuing Vrabel as a potential replacement. Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry were given another year despite the team’s disappointing 3-14 season. Fans felt that with Vrabel already in the organization, he presented a clear and viable option to overhaul the team’s leadership.

Should Vrabel attempt to bring Ventrone to New England, the Browns may face yet another coaching vacancy to fill this offseason. Cleveland is already in search of a new offensive coordinator, making the potential loss of Ventrone an additional challenge for the front office and coaching staff.

Ventrone’s departure could disrupt the momentum he has built with the Browns’ special teams unit, particularly as they look to rebound from a difficult 2024 campaign. While it remains to be seen whether Vrabel will request permission to hire Ventrone, the Browns must be prepared for the possibility of losing one of their most respected assistants.

As the offseason unfolds, the Browns will have to navigate these potential changes while working to address other key areas, including their offensive strategy and personnel decisions. Losing Ventrone to Vrabel would add another layer of complexity to an already critical offseason for Cleveland.
