The Green Bay Packers faced a disappointing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round, which highlighted a critical gap in their roster: the lack of a true No. 1 wide receiver. Despite their depth at the position, none of their current receivers have stepped into that role. A potential trade could address this issue by bringing in an elite wideout, even if it means parting with one of their reliable contributors.
Romeo Doubs has been a consistent target for quarterback Jordan Love, but he has yet to emerge as the dominant receiver the team needs. Similarly, fellow receivers Jayden Reed and Christian Watson have also struggled to establish themselves as top-tier options. With Watson’s future in question due to his ACL injury and Doubs entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025, ESPN analyst Ben Solak proposed a bold trade scenario. Solak suggested the Packers could consider dealing Doubs to acquire Seattle Seahawks star receiver DK Metcalf, a move that could significantly upgrade their offense.
“Expect them to pursue Tee Higgins, but if the cost becomes prohibitive, they might explore trading someone like Romeo Doubs—who will be in a contract year in 2025—for a disgruntled star,” Solak explained. “Garrett Wilson or DK Metcalf? My bet would be on Metcalf.”
Doubs’ availability has been inconsistent this season, as he missed two games due to a concussion and was briefly sidelined during the Wild Card game for concussion evaluation. He also served a one-game suspension during the season. Despite these setbacks, Doubs has been arguably the Packers’ most dependable receiver. However, young receivers like Reed and Dontayvion Wicks have shown promise, giving the Packers the depth to consider moving on from Doubs in exchange for a proven star like Metcalf.
Metcalf, a two-time Pro Bowler, signed a three-year, $72 million extension with the Seahawks in 2022, making him a free agent after the 2025 season. If acquired by the Packers, he could immediately address their need for a true No. 1 receiver. His presence would likely elevate the performance of other players like Reed and Wicks by drawing defensive attention. While trading Doubs might seem like a steep price, the Packers’ depth at receiver and the potential to draft additional talent could offset his departure.
Adding Metcalf could also be a strategic long-term move for Green Bay. The team could afford to sign him to a contract extension, ensuring his contributions beyond the next season. Meanwhile, Christian Watson, who had a career-high 15-game season before his injury, could return to add even more firepower to the receiving corps.
With 6,324 career receiving yards and a proven track record as a playmaker, Metcalf would provide the Packers with the elite talent they need to compete at a higher level. If the team aims to maximize its offensive potential, parting with Doubs to acquire Metcalf could be the move that propels them forward.
