With 24 players on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster set to hit free agency at the start of the new league year, it’s likely several of them won’t return in 2025. Here’s a breakdown of who might have played their final game in Black and Gold and who could be back next season.
Almost Certainly Leaving
LT Dan Moore Jr.
The Steelers’ investment in tackles Troy Fautanu and Broderick Jones makes Moore’s return unlikely. As a starter, Moore will likely command a higher salary than Pittsburgh is willing to pay.
RB Najee Harris
The team passed on using Harris’s fifth-year option, and now re-signing him would come at a much higher cost. With Harris projected as the top running back in free agency, it’s doubtful the Steelers will pay a premium to keep him.
Leaning Toward Leaving
QB Russell Wilson: Despite a promising start, Wilson faltered down the stretch and lacks the mobility and versatility the Steelers need. At 37, his chances of returning as a starter are slim.
CB Donte Jackson & CB Cam Sutton**: Both corners struggled late in the season, and younger players like Cory Trice Jr. and Beanie Bishop could take their places.
-RG James Daniels: Recovering from an Achilles injury, Daniels might not be ready for the start of 2025. Rookie Mason McCormick filled in well and may make Daniels expendable.
-TE MyCole Pruitt, WR Mike Williams, WR Van Jefferson**: With wide receiver as a major offseason priority, it’s unlikely these players will be re-signed.
Toss-Ups
QB Justin Fields: Fields could be a stopgap option if the Steelers avoid other uninspiring choices like Daniel Jones or Trey Lance.
– FS Damontae Kazee, CB James Pierre, LB Tyler Matakevich**: Solid but aging contributors who could be replaced by younger, cheaper talent.
Likely to Return
WR Ben Skowronek: A physical receiver who excels on special teams, making him a reliable role player.
ILB Elandon Roberts**: An effective run-stopper who adds value to the linebacker group.
-DL Isaiahh Loudermilk, OLB Jeremiah Moon (ERFA), RB Jaylen Warren (RFA), C Ryan McCollum (ERFA)**: As restricted or exclusive rights free agents, these players are almost certain to return.
Others at Risk
Beyond the free agents, other players may also depart. Wide receiver George Pickens, entering a contract year, has an uncertain future. Veterans like Preston Smith and Larry Ogunjobi could be cap casualties, while Cordarrelle Patterson, who struggled as a returner, might also be replaced.
As the offseason progresses, the Steelers will likely reshape their roster significantly to address key weaknesses and position themselves for a stronger 2025 campaign.
