The Green Bay Packers are coming off a disappointing 2024 season, one that could signal significant roster changes heading into 2025. Among the biggest potential moves is the predicted departure of star cornerback Jaire Alexander, who has faced challenges in recent years despite his impressive early career.
Alexander, a two-time All-Pro, has struggled with injuries, playing just 14 games over the past two seasons. In addition, he faced disciplinary issues, including a one-game suspension last year for conduct detrimental to the team. While his talent remains undeniable, these issues have raised questions about his future in Green Bay.
The 27-year-old cornerback is currently on a four-year, $84 million contract, but the deal includes a potential out this offseason. If the Packers were to cut ties with Alexander, it would result in a $19 million dead cap hit. However, trading him could be a more practical option, given his value on the market.
On Wednesday, Yardbarker’s NFL team shared a “bold prediction,” suggesting the Packers will trade Alexander before the 2025 season begins. Citing NBC Sports’ Kelly Hallinan, they noted Alexander’s reserved demeanor following Green Bay’s wild-card loss to the Eagles, where he avoided discussing his future with the team, stating he wasn’t sure if he’d return.
As a two-time second-team All-Pro, Alexander is expected to attract significant interest on the trade market. According to the report, he could potentially command multiple second- and third-round draft picks in a trade.
Despite his limited availability due to injuries, Alexander has continued to show flashes of brilliance. In seven games during the 2024 season, he recorded two interceptions, including a 52-yard pick-six, and held opposing quarterbacks to an 86.9 passer rating when targeting him. His performance demonstrates that he still has plenty left to offer, whether with the Packers or another team.
The Packers will need to act carefully to maintain leverage if Alexander publicly expresses a desire to leave, as such a move could weaken their negotiating position. However, if Green Bay can control the narrative, they’ll be in a strong position to decide whether to retain their star corner or secure valuable assets in a trade.
Ultimately, Alexander’s future remains uncertain, but his talent ensures that the Packers will have options as they navigate this critical offseason decision.
