Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions had a historic regular season, finishing with a 15-2 record, surpassing their previous best of 12 wins. They also secured the top seed in the NFC and earned a bye in the NFL playoffs. However, their dreams of a deep postseason run were shattered on Saturday night when the Washington Commanders defeated them 45-31 at Ford Field.
Quarterback Jared Goff struggled mightily in the game, completing just 23 of 40 passes for 313 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He also lost a fumble, contributing significantly to the loss.
After the game, an emotional Campbell addressed the media in a tearful press conference, taking full responsibility for the team’s defeat. He acknowledged the hard work and sacrifices the players made throughout the season, saying, “What [the players] put into it… what the people don’t know that they go through… It’s my fault. It’s my fault.” He emphasized the physical and mental toll of the long season, noting how difficult it is to stay focused while dealing with the wear and tear on their bodies.
Despite Detroit’s own mistakes, the Commanders’ success could largely be attributed to the outstanding performance of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. Daniels completed 22 of 31 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his poise and skill with several impressive throws.
The Lions’ season, which had been a remarkable achievement, ended in disappointment, especially after their deep playoff run in 2023, where they reached the NFC Championship. With several key coaching staff members, including offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, being sought after by other teams for head coaching positions, the Lions face an uncertain offseason as they look to address potential gaps on their roster and coaching staff.
Meanwhile, the Commanders will advance to the NFC Championship Game, where they will face the winner of the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Rams matchup.
