Former Auburn Tigers Captain Highlights Two Standout Freshmen from 2024 Season
Auburn Tigers’ former team captain and linebacker, Eugene Asante, reflected on the most impressive freshmen from the 2024 season. Without hesitation, he identified one standout player from each side of the ball who left a lasting impression on him: a wide receiver on offense and a linebacker on defense.
Offensive Standout: A Dedicated and Explosive Wide Receiver
Asante’s choice for the most impressive offensive freshman came as no surprise—this young wide receiver was one of Auburn’s top playmakers throughout the season. He finished the year with 37 receptions, 598 yards, and eight touchdowns, consistently proving to be a nightmare for opposing defensive backs.
Beyond his on-field production, what truly set this freshman apart was his relentless work ethic. Asante, who regularly stayed after practice to get in extra reps and observe his teammates, repeatedly noticed this young receiver putting in additional work.
Cam Coleman is there every single day getting extra work and taking care of his body. He truly loves the game of football, and I admire him as a young man,”Asante shared.
As the season progressed, fatigue became a factor for many players, both physically and mentally. However, this receiver never wavered in his dedication. While others began heading out of the facility earlier, he remained behind—either working out, watching film, or further honing his skills.
“When some players left the building early, Cam was consistently a guy who stayed back whether it’s working out or studying film.
This level of commitment at such an early stage in his career has Auburn fans excited about what he can accomplish in the coming years. His talent, leadership qualities, and dedication make him a key piece of the Tigers’ offense moving forward.
Defensive Standout: A Fierce Linebacker Ready to Step Up
On the defensive side of the ball, Asante’s pick was a linebacker who showed flashes of greatness in his freshman season. Asante, playing the same position, had a front-row seat to the young player’s growth and impact.
“He’s super talented in terms of everything he brings to the game,” Asante explained. He’s a fast, downhill type of linebacker, and I know he is going to blossom into a great player.
While his statistical contributions were modest—27 total tackles, three sacks, and one pass deflection his presence on the field was undeniable. He played a specific role in Auburn’s defensive schemes, particularly in **three-down packages designed to neutralize opposing quarterbacks*.
With Asante and fellow linebacker Jalen McLeod heading to the 2025 NFL Draft, this freshman is poised to take on a much larger role next season. His ability to adapt, execute his responsibilities, and excel in his designated role as a freshman is a strong indicator that he’s ready for the challenge.
The way he embraced and excelled in that position lets me know he is ready, Asante added.
Auburn’s Future Looks Bright
As these two young standouts enter their sophomore seasons, their development will be crucial for Auburn’s success. Their performances as freshmen already showcased elite talent, and if their work ethic and leadership continue to grow, they could both be future team captains.
With Auburn aiming to reestablish itself as a championship contender, the foundation being laid by players like these will be instrumental in building a winning program for years to come.
