Auburn University issued a significant update regarding the health of head football coach Hugh Freeze on Friday. In an official statement, the school revealed that Freeze has been diagnosed with an early-stage but treatable form of prostate cancer. “Recently, Coach Freeze was diagnosed with an early form of prostate cancer,” Auburn’s statement read. “Thankfully, it was detected early, and his doctors have advised that it is very treatable and curable. He will continue his normal coaching duties and responsibilities, and with forthcoming proper treatment, is expected to make a full recovery.
“Coach Freeze is incredibly appreciative of our medical professionals and has asked that we use his experience as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing and scheduling annual health screenings.”
Freeze’s Resilience Through Health Challenges
This is not the first time Freeze has faced serious health issues. In 2019, while recovering from a severe staph infection, he famously coached a game from a hospital bed positioned in a coaches’ box. His determination to continue coaching despite medical setbacks is well-documented, so it comes as no surprise that he intends to remain fully involved with the Auburn football program while undergoing treatment.
Freeze’s Coaching Tenure at Auburn
Freeze recently completed his second season as the Tigers’ head coach. Before arriving at Auburn, he held coaching positions at Arkansas State, Ole Miss, and Liberty. Since taking over at Auburn, the 55-year-old has compiled an 11-14 record, with an overall career coaching record of 87-61.
