Auburn Tigers Maintain No. 1 Spot, Eye SEC Tournament After Securing Regular-Season Title
For yet another week, the Auburn Tigers remain atop the AP Top 25 Poll, continuing their dominant run through the college basketball season. The Tigers played two crucial games over the past week, further solidifying their place as the team to beat.
Auburn’s first matchup came on Wednesday, February 26, when they hosted the Ole Miss Rebels at Neville Arena. The Tigers delivered a commanding performance, crushing Ole Miss 106-76. Auburn legend Charles Barkley was in attendance to witness the dominant victory, as the team showcased its offensive firepower in front of the home crowd.
Following that win, Auburn hit the road for a high-stakes showdown against No. 17 Kentucky at Rupp Arena. The game symbolized a shift in SEC basketball dominance—a battle between Kentucky’s storied past and Auburn’s emerging powerhouse status. With Kentucky navigating a rebuilding year after the departure of longtime head coach John Calipari, Auburn took full advantage of the opportunity. The Tigers dismantled the Wildcats 94-78, leaving no doubt about who currently rules the conference.
That victory not only strengthened Auburn’s grip on the No. 1 ranking but also clinched at least a share of the SEC regular-season championship. Later that same evening, the Tigers were crowned outright conference champions after Tennessee edged out Alabama with a dramatic buzzer-beater.
Auburn’s Path to the NCAA Tournament
With the latest projections released at the end of February, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has Auburn locked in as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, as well as the top seed in the South region. If the tournament started today, Auburn would face the winner of a First Four matchup between Southern and American. Should they advance, they would then take on either Illinois or Vanderbilt in the next round.
The Tigers’ region is filled with formidable challengers, including Clemson, Marquette, Michigan, Iowa State, and a potential rematch with Kentucky. Auburn’s performance in the SEC Tournament will play a crucial role in maintaining their top seeding heading into March Madness.
Final Two Regular-Season Games
Before turning their focus to postseason play, Auburn must first close out the regular season with two important matchups. Up next is a road game against No. 22 Texas A&M. The Aggies have struggled recently, losing their last two games and dropping 10 spots in the latest AP rankings.
After that, the Tigers will face their biggest conference rival, No. 7 Alabama. The Crimson Tide are coming off a heartbreaking loss to Tennessee and have another tough test ahead against No. 5 Florida before they take on Auburn.
With just two games left before the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Auburn looks to keep its momentum rolling as the top team in the country.
