Man Dies After Skiing Accident at Giant’s Ridge Ski Resort

A 34-year-old man has died following a tragic skiing accident at Giant’s Ridge Ski Resort in northeastern Minnesota on Saturday afternoon, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.

According to a statement from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, emergency services were called to the resort shortly after 2:30 p.m. following reports of a skier who had suffered severe injuries after veering off-course and colliding with a tree on one of the resort’s advanced trails, known for its steep terrain and challenging conditions.

Ski patrol was first to respond, administering immediate first aid and stabilizing the man while awaiting emergency medical personnel. Despite rapid response efforts, the skier sustained critical injuries and was transported via ambulance to Essentia Health-Northern Pines Medical Center in Aurora. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim, pending notification of next of kin. Witnesses at the scene reported that the man appeared to lose control at high speed before leaving the groomed path and crashing into a wooded area. Weather conditions at the time were reported as fair, with good visibility and moderate ski traffic.

Giant’s Ridge Ski Resort, a popular winter sports destination located about 60 miles north of Duluth, issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident:

> “We are heartbroken by the tragic accident that occurred on our slopes this weekend. Our hearts go out to the skier’s family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. The safety and well-being of our guests is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.”

The sheriff’s office confirmed that foul play is not suspected, and preliminary findings suggest the incident was a result of high speed and loss of control on difficult terrain. It is unclear whether the victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

This marks the first fatality of the current ski season at Giant’s Ridge, though ski-related injuries are not uncommon at the resort, especially during peak winter months. Authorities are urging skiers to adhere to posted trail difficulty ratings and to use proper safety gear, especially when navigating expert-level runs.

More details are expected to be released as the investigation continues.
