Massachusetts ski resort has claimed the life of a college student, authorities confirmed late Sunday evening.
The victim, identified as 21-year-old Emily Carter, a junior at Northeastern University, was skiing on an intermediate trail at Snowy Ridge Resort when she lost control and collided with a tree around 2:30 p.m. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but despite life-saving efforts, Carter was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Resort officials said Carter was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. “Our hearts are broken by this devastating loss,” the resort said in a statement. “We are working closely with local authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Witnesses described the conditions on the slopes as “fair” but said visibility was somewhat reduced due to light snowfall during the afternoon. The trail where the accident occurred was temporarily closed following the incident.
Friends and classmates remembered Carter as an “energetic, kind-hearted” student who loved outdoor activities and was passionate about environmental science.
Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun expressed condolences on behalf of the university community. “Emily was a bright and promising young woman whose impact was felt by everyone around her,” he said. Counseling services have been made available to students and staff coping with the loss.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
