The Kentucky Wildcats are turning back the clock—and strengthening their bench—with another major alumni hire. Just weeks after NBA All-Star John Wall joined the coaching staff, the Wildcats have announced that DeMarcus Cousins, a former Kentucky standout and longtime NBA veteran, will also be joining the program as a special assistant to the head coach.
Cousins, who played alongside Wall during Kentucky’s electrifying 2009–10 season under John Calipari, brings a wealth of professional experience and on-court intensity to a Wildcats team looking to reclaim national dominance.
“I owe a lot to Kentucky, and I’m thrilled to come back in this new role,” Cousins said during a press conference on Monday. “Coach Cal gave me a platform when I was young, and now it’s my turn to give back—to help guide and mentor the next generation of Cats.”
Wall, who was hired earlier this month as a player development coach, welcomed the move, noting the duo’s chemistry and shared commitment to the program. “Boogie’s IQ and passion for the game are second to none,” Wall said. “These players are about to learn a lot.”
Coach Calipari expressed his excitement as well. “We’re building something special with people who know what it means to wear Kentucky blue. Having guys like John and DeMarcus in the building every day will be a game-changer.”
The Wildcats, who are coming off a mixed 2024–25 season, are clearly doubling down on culture, legacy, and mentorship as they prepare for the future.
With two of the most iconic ‘one-and-done’ players back on campus in new roles, Big Blue Nation has plenty to be excited about heading into the new season.
