Dawn Staley Sets New Benchmark in College Basketball Coaching

Dawn Staley has once again raised the bar for excellence in women’s college basketball. The South Carolina Gamecocks head coach has guided her team through a historic 2024–25 season, further cementing her status as one of the greatest coaching minds in the sport.

Staley’s Gamecocks finished the season with a dominant 35–4 record, capturing the SEC Tournament title and sharing the SEC regular-season crown. The team extended its home winning streak to 71 games—the longest active streak in the SEC and third-longest in NCAA women’s basketball history. They also notched a 57-game SEC regular-season win streak, tying for sixth all-time.

“This group showed relentless determination,” Staley said following their tournament win. “Every day, they came to work with heart, grit, and the belief that we could be great.”

The accolades have followed. Staley was named to the Naismith Coach of the Year watch list for a record-extending fourth time and recently signed a groundbreaking $25 million contract extension through 2030, making her the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball history. The move reflects not just her coaching prowess but her impact as a trailblazer in women’s sports.

Her influence continues to break barriers off the court as well. In a historic first, Staley became the only NCAA women’s basketball coach ever invited to the prestigious Presidents Cup event, an honor that underscores her role as a transformative figure in collegiate athletics.

As the South Carolina program continues to thrive, Staley’s leadership and legacy remain a beacon for future generations of players, coaches, and fans alike.
