Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope received a major boost to his 2025-26 roster as sophomore guard Otega Oweh announced his decision to withdraw from the NBA Draft and return to college for another season.
Oweh, who transferred to Kentucky last year, had been testing the draft waters following a standout season in which he averaged 13.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. His strong two-way presence and athleticism had attracted attention from several NBA scouts, but the feedback ultimately convinced him that another year of development at the collegiate level would benefit his long-term career.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore the NBA process, but after talking with my family and coaches, I’ve decided that my heart is still in Lexington,” Oweh said in a social media post. “I’m coming back to chase something special with Coach Pope and my brothers.”
The decision is a significant win for Mark Pope, who is heading into his second season as Kentucky’s head coach. Oweh’s return solidifies the Wildcats’ backcourt, adding experience and leadership to a roster that’s already expected to be one of the most competitive in the SEC.
Pope praised Oweh’s maturity and commitment: “Otega is the kind of player and person you build winning teams around. He’s grown tremendously and is hungry to lead this team to something great. We’re thrilled to have him back.”
With Oweh back in the fold, Kentucky fans can expect a high-octane, defensive-minded team ready to contend nationally. The Wildcats now have a clearer picture of their roster, and expectations continue to rise as the new season approaches.
