How Otega Oweh plans to become an even better player in year two at Kentucky

After a promising freshman season, Kentucky guard Otega Oweh is focused on taking his game to the next level in year two with the Wildcats. The 6-foot-5 sophomore has spent the offseason refining his skills, building strength, and sharpening his basketball IQ — all part of a personal mission to become a more complete player.

“I learned a lot last season, especially about the speed and physicality of the college game,” Oweh said. “This summer, I’m working on tightening my handle, improving my outside shot, and becoming a better defender.”

Oweh averaged 6.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in limited minutes as a freshman but showed flashes of high-level potential with his athleticism and energy off the bench. Now, with a year of experience under his belt, he’s aiming to earn a bigger role in Coach John Calipari’s rotation.

“Confidence is key,” Oweh said. “I know what to expect now. I’m coming into this season with a different mindset — I want to impact both ends of the floor and help us win games.”

Coaches have praised Oweh’s work ethic during summer workouts and believe he could be one of the breakout players in the SEC this season.

“He’s been in the gym every day, putting in the work,” said assistant coach Chin Coleman. “Otega’s athleticism was never in question. Now he’s putting the pieces together.”

As the Wildcats reload for another competitive season, Oweh’s development could play a key role in the team’s success. With hard work, focus, and growing confidence, the sophomore guard is determined to make a bigger impact — and he’s just getting started.
