Kentucky Wildcats to honour a legend in bronze — university set to immortalize iconic figure with statue, construction to begin soon

In a momentous tribute to one of the most revered figures in Kentucky sports history, the University of Kentucky has announced plans to immortalize Adolph Rupp in bronze. A statue honoring the legendary basketball coach will be erected outside Rupp Arena, marking a significant step in preserving the legacy of a man who helped shape the Wildcats’ storied basketball tradition.

Construction on the statue is set to begin later this summer, with the unveiling ceremony planned for the 2025–26 season opener. The project, funded through a combination of alumni donations and athletic department contributions, aims to celebrate Rupp’s unmatched achievements — including four NCAA championships, over 800 career wins, and a coaching tenure that forever changed college basketball.

“Coach Rupp is a foundational figure not only in Kentucky basketball but in the entire landscape of the sport,” said University President Dr. Eli Capilouto. “This statue is more than a monument — it’s a symbol of excellence, tradition, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.”

Sculpted by nationally acclaimed artist Jane Harmon, the statue will capture Rupp in his signature courtside stance, clipboard in hand, gazing out toward the arena that bears his name.

Former players and fans alike have welcomed the move, calling it a long-overdue tribute. “Coach Rupp built the foundation for what we all stand on today,” said former Wildcat great Dan Issel. “This bronze will stand tall, just like the legacy he left behind.”

The university also plans to incorporate an interactive digital display alongside the statue, allowing fans to explore Rupp’s coaching milestones, archival photos, and historic game footage.

As the Wildcats continue their journey into the future, this powerful tribute ensures that the spirit of one of Kentucky’s greatest legends remains etched in Wildcat blue — and now, in bronze.
