BREAKING NEWS: Rupp Arena’s Mega-Expansion Approved — $175M: Kentucky’s Board OKs $175M Rupp Arena Renovation, Pushing Capacity to 31,000, Becoming College Basketball’s Largest

In a landmark decision, the University of Kentucky’s Board of Trustees has approved a massive $175 million renovation and expansion of the legendary Rupp Arena. The upgrade will increase seating capacity to 31,000, making it the largest arena in college basketball history.

The expansion plan, years in the making, aims to modernize the fan experience while reinforcing Rupp Arena’s status as the heart of college hoops. The renovation will feature:

An expanded upper deck to accommodate thousands of additional fans

Cutting-edge video and audio systems

Upgraded locker rooms, player facilities, and training centers

New premium seating and luxury suite options

Enhanced concourses, concessions, and fan interaction zones

“This isn’t just an investment in a building,” said UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart. “It’s an investment in the future of Kentucky basketball, in the fans who make this place special, and in maintaining our position at the pinnacle of the sport.”

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with phased work allowing the Wildcats to continue playing home games at Rupp throughout the process. Full completion is projected ahead of the 2028–29 season.

This bold move solidifies Kentucky’s commitment to excellence — both on and off the court — as Rupp Arena prepares to stand taller, louder, and prouder than ever before.
