Luis Diaz disallowed goal is just the tip of the iceberg with Liverpool and VAR

Once again for all the wrong reasons, Liverpool is at the center of a VAR controversy storm. Following the Reds’ loss to Tottenham Hotspur, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) president Howard Webb issued an apology to the team for the decision to disallow Luis Diaz’s goal. Following Liverpool’s heartbreaking loss, the PGMOL issued a statement acknowledging “significant human error” for the attacker’s would-be opener’s exclusion.

Just minutes after Curtis Jones was dismissed from the game, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s team with 10 players, the Colombian’s attempt was ruled out. The assistant referee’s flag stopped Diaz’s celebrations after he raced in behind the Spurs defense and fired past Guglielmo Vicario. According to reports, the original check was for Diaz’s goal to stand and not the initial offside decision to be overturned when the video assistant referee intervened.

After Joel Matip’s own goal in stoppage time, Liverpool went on to lose 2-1, but the controversy continues. The incident is the newest technological blunder to plague Jurgen Klopp’s team. After Manchester City disappointed earlier in the day, they lost the chance to move atop the Premier League as a result of their first Liverpool loss of the year.

In a shocking victory over Pep Guardiola’s team, Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated them 2-1 on goals from Pedro Neto and Hwang Hee-chan.
