95 per cent sure” – Dominik Szoboszlai explains role in Liverpool penalty Mohamed Salah scored

In Liverpool’s recent victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby, Dominik Szoboszlai played a crucial role in Mohamed Salah’s game-changing penalty. Salah scored two goals in the second half to secure a 2-0 win for Liverpool, with the first coming from the spot.

The breakthrough came in controversial circumstances. Luis Díaz’s cross was blocked by the hand of Everton defender Michael Keane, leading to a VAR review and a penalty decision in Liverpool’s favor.

During this decisive moment, Szoboszlai was seen holding the ball and protecting the penalty spot from any interference by Everton players. Speaking after the game, the Hungarian midfielder explained his actions, saying, “To be honest, I saw it from behind, so I was probably 95 per cent sure that it was going to be a penalty. I just held the ball so nobody took it and stood there to protect the penalty spot. Yeah, we are a team.”

Szoboszlai also shared his thoughts on his first experience of a Merseyside derby. Assessing both the atmosphere and the game itself, he reflected on a positive afternoon:

“It feels really good. As I said before, playing at Anfield is something special. I didn’t expect that, but yes it feels nice. I expected it was going to be good, but I didn’t realize it would be this loud. I have played in a lot of stadiums, but this is one of the best.

“We were in a good position when they went to 10 men because at times this season, we have played with 10 or nine men. I know how it feels to play with 10 men so I know how they feel. You have to be focused until the end — we take the three points and move on to the next game.”
