Calum Scanlon stakes left-back claim with last-minute assist for England U19s

Calum Scanlon registered his first international assist to help England U19s to a late win against Japan on Saturday.

The defender made his seventh appearance for Simon Rask’s side as the Young Lions made it two wins from Marbella before the international break. Scanlon has had a relatively regular role at left-back for his country since making his England Under-19 debut against Germany in June.

The team took a 2-0 lead thanks to first-half goals from Manchester City’s Jacob Wright and Tottenham’s Will Lancashire, but Japan equalized shortly after the end of the second half. The Liverpool Academy graduate played the full 90 minutes against Romania earlier this week, came on for Kian Best an hour later and made his presence known by scoring the winning goal in the last minute.Scanlon beat a Japanese defender and placed a low cross for substitute Jamie Donley to score the winner. It was his second friendly of the November international break, his side beating Romania 6-0 in Marbella on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old made his United debut in the 5-1 win over Toulouse last month but has made four pre-season appearances in the summer. Andy Robertson’s shoulder injury in the last international break has opened up the possibility of further involvement in the coming weeks, with Scanlon likely to compete with Kostas Tsimikas, Joe Gomez and Luke Chambers for the rest of the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp has rotated his squad in the opening stages of the League Cup and Europa League, with upcoming games against LASK, Union SG and West Ham providing more opportunities for top players in the first-team squad.Scanlon was described by the Liverpool manager last summer as “fun to watch” and was called up to first-team training ahead of last month’s Merseyside derby. It remains to be seen whether his recent developments will lead to a big time, but Klopp will no doubt be keeping an eye on the youngster as the weeks go by.
