Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton were on target for England U21s in their 3-0 win over Northern Ireland, but not everyone liked where the goals came from at Goodison Park.
The Everton Stadium hosted the Young Lions at home in the final European U21 Championship qualifier on Tuesday, but the current Liverpool midfielder and loanee’s strike stole the show.England took the lead when Morton, currently on loan at Championship club Hull, fired home a wonderful strike from outside the box to score his first goal for his country at U21 level. The 21-year-old made his debut as a substitute for Lee Kasli in last week’s 3-0 win over Serbia and looked confident from the start of the final.
Morton jokingly described himself as “not bitter” when previewing the Reds’ game at home to their city rivals, politely shedding the label often given to Everton fans. Those same fans had mixed feelings when Elliott doubled England’s lead with a superb free-kick just after the hour mark.Liverpool’s number 19 was nervous during the clash due to his loyalty to the Reds, but that didn’t stop him from winning as he and Morton created a textbook lobby for Gwladys Street.
Jarell quansah was also in the Young Lions squad, this time playing the full 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet after making a late cameo in Saturday’s win over Serbia.Everton may have hosted the occasion, but it was Liverpool who took all three points to ensure England maintained their perfect start to Group C qualification.
After the game, manager Carsley, a former Everton midfielder, praised Elliott’s performance as he gains confidence on the international stage.”It’s important that he keeps scoring goals and providing assists because he’s becoming that kind of player,” the England U21 manager was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND – Tuesday 21 November 2023: England’s Harvey Elliott after the UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2025 Group F match between England and Northern Ireland at Goodison Park.“His stats and data for us are very high in terms of his aggressive movement around the penalty area, the number of chances he creates for other players, but more importantly his work rate and ball control. “He has to keep scoring and getting assists.
That’s a big part of his game. For many players, the most important thing is to survive the competition. “Make sure you’re healthy, your attitude is right and you’re trying to be more selective.”So if you get the chance, take it.
It’s a big ask to be a young player and play in the Premier League every week, so to put yourself in that position is a big deal.“He came into camp very healthy and sharp. He does the right thing. That’s all he can do. “He made a very good impression when he arrived at Liverpool and I can see that continuing.”
