“I’m not a fan of VAR, but…” – The former Red used the 65th-minute Etihad incident to highlight the importance of VAR

Neil Mellor believes VAR is better used in the Premier League these days after Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester City last weekend. The Sky Blues took the lead through Erling Haaland in the first half, but the hosts briefly went ahead as the clock ticked down at the Etihad. City midfielder Rhodri tried his luck just outside the box but his effort went wide after the ball hit the back of Ryan Gravenbirch’s legs.

Rodri stood in front of the referee with his teammates and motioned for the ball to be put into our hands on number 38 resulting in a penalty kick. Former Red Mellor went to the X and thanked the VAR for the comment. About tonight’s event. I’m not a fan of VAR, but if top players like Rodri start putting pressure on referees to give penalties for things like this, I can see why we need it!It’s not even close to handball! 65 mins 1-0 #Review #LFCTV #MCILIV #Liverpool FC pic.twitter.com/iLAJpvvOYj— Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) November 27, 2023

The VAR has clearly assessed the incident, but only takes one look to ensure the referee’s decision to award a corner was correct. It’s very strange for the City players to pretend to be impressed when Gravenberch isn’t around, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them questioning the referee. In this case, you don’t necessarily need VAR to audit, but you can see where Mellor is coming from.If the referee had awarded a penalty kick, technology would have been used to make the correct decision.
