The debate looks unlikely to go away, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s position again the subject of discussion following Liverpool’s draw against Manchester City.
The Reds’ number 66 produced a superb late strike to deny Erling Haaland his first game at the Etihad and earn his side a point.
His recent performances in midfield for England have sparked debate over whether he will ever be able to take over that role in his own team, but former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that will never happen.”Trent Alexander-Arnold will always be Jurgen Klopp’s right-back,” Carragher told Sky Sports after sharing Saturday’s victory. “I don’t think Jurgen Klopp will play him in midfield.” @Cara23 Discussing Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role at Liverpool? pic.twitter.com/Hl1GzTlWIs— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) November 25, 2023″But if you look at his quality, there’s no doubt about it.
He’s the quality of a midfielder and he fights in one-on-one defence. “I don’t think Jurgen Klopp will play him in midfield. But for Gareth Southgate, he is a midfielder.”I hope Liverpool get a top-class right-back rather than a young player for the away games and say, ‘Today we’re going to push you and find someone to play one-on-one.’ “As a winger, I think this could be a step forward for Liverpool.”Alexander-Arnold has spent more time on the pitch since Klopp switched to a hybrid right-back/midfield role earlier this year.
He registered six assists in his first five games in the position and has since become an even bigger creative asset for the Reds.England’s recent impressive performances in the center of the park have fueled the talk, but there is no indication that Klopp sees this as a viable short-term option. Alexander-Arnold right-back Conor Bradley has not featured for United since pre-season after injuring his back in the summer.
It remains to be seen whether the manager will invest in the position in the near future, but for now the future looks bright for Liverpool’s vice-captain.
