‘Real number 9’ – Liverpool manager praises teenage player who never stops scoring

Liverpool Under-21 manager Barry Lutas has praised the “brilliant” Luis Koumas after the striker continued his wonderful season. Koumas, son of former West Brom and Wigan Athletic midfielder Jason, scored as the Reds lost 3-1 to Burnley in the Lancashire Senior Cup. He also scored a goal that was not ruled offside.

Koumas is still eligible to play for the under-18s but has scored four goals and provided two assists in six appearances at senior level. Leutas praised Koumas, admitting that it is much harder for the Under-21s to win the ball away. Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, he said: “He’s been playing for the Under-18s all season and he’s done a great job for us. His second goal was offside so it could have been two great results tonight.”But for him, the earlier he took a step and the further he went, the more difficult it was to find the goal.

“He knows that, but he did us a favor.”Jayden Dunns is also having a productive season. The 17-year-old scored nine goals in seven appearances for the Under-18s against Burnley. Leutas said Dunnes will now have more opportunities for under-21 players.advertisementHe continued: “Dancy was great even at 18. He scored all kinds of goals and looked like a real number nine. “We can give him a chance tonight so he knows I’m coming for him.”
