Those around the Pittsburgh Steelers were confident Kenny Pickett was the long-term answer, improving from 12 starts and entering his rookie campaign heading into the 2023 NFL regular season. This summer, rumors began to circulate that Pickett’s skills had improved and that he was improving. All of this led to a perfect preseason for Pickett, despite limited action.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to apply to the regular season. Through 12 games this season, Pickett has thrown for just 2,070 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. It was very successful in reducing sales, but it wasn’t enough. There are concerns about Pittsburgh’s future and people are wondering if the team should look for a new quarterback. NBC Sports’ Peter King thinks so, and he had a particular name in mind for the Steelers when he appeared on The Cook & Joe Show earlier this week.“Let’s say Bo Nix is there. If the Steelers make their pick and they like Bo Nix, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to take him. But the most important thing I want to say to Kenny Pickett is, “Your Steeler career is not over, but now you have to fight for your job.” “I have no preconceived notions and will let the best defender win.”If you haven’t heard his name yet, Nix had a great season at the University of Oregon.
He finished third in Heisman Trophy voting after passing for 4,145 yards and 46 touchdowns on the season. It was an opportune time for him to end a five-year college career between Oregon and Auburn. The Knicks will turn 24 once the 2024 NFL Draft is over. He is a few months older than Pickett was when he was drafted. Coming out of college, age was a concern for Pickett, and it was also a concern for the Knicks. But after growing up in Oregon, he became a first-round pick. The 2024 NFL Draft features elite quarterbacks led by Drake May and Caleb Williams. Unfortunately, the Steelers probably don’t have a bad enough record to take one of the top five picks. What should the Steelers do at quarterback this offseason? There is, and should be, some skepticism about pickets. This doesn’t seem like the best route for the Steelers. They will target veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency on a short-term deal, but he will likely stick with the Minnesota Vikings for now. If Pittsburgh wants a young, talented option, Justin Fields’ name will likely pop up in trade rumors in the coming months.Given the franchise’s history, they could give Pickett another year or two. Honestly, I need to give it a few more chances.
As we know, the coaching staff around him hasn’t put him in the best position to succeed. Pittsburgh will have an opportunity to secure a better offensive coordinator this offseason, which will put Pickett in a better position to succeed.Ultimately, all of this points to the Knicks not making sense in Pittsburgh. He’s only a year younger than Pickett, and his overall accomplishments aren’t nearly what the Steelers are worth. Instead, they could build their draft to strengthen the trenches or even acquire another dynamic playmaker.
