RB Leipzig have confirmed a new deal ahead of the January transfer window, which could mean Fabio Carvalho’s return to Liverpool is imminent.
Carvalho played just 360 minutes in the first half of his loan spell at Leipzig, making just four full appearances and three starts in 15 games.
This has led to hopes that he will return to Liverpool in January, with Anfield’s David Lynch reporting that talks have begun over an early termination of his loan deal.Leipzig sporting director Reuven Schröder noted that Carvalho was “getting game time” rather than his “usual strong performances” for his parent club.Midfielder Emil Forsberg’s move to the New York Red Bulls raised hopes of a bigger role for Carvalho.
But now Leipzig have confirmed Carvalho’s path to the first team by signing Napoli’s Elsif Elmas in place of Forsberg.Elmas has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract and will join the pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, starting January 2. It remains to be seen whether Carvalho will make the squad, with Liverpool likely looking to resolve his situation as quickly as possible.
Leipzig coach Marco Rose chose another loanee, Harvey Simmons, as a starter in one of the two attacking midfield positions, with Forsberg and Christoph Baumgartner both playing more minutes than Carvalho. 2RJG943 Leverkusen – RB Leipzig’s Fabio Carvalho during the Bundesliga match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and RB Leipzig at DE Bay Arena in Leverkusen, Germany, May 27, 2023. If Carvalho’s contract falls through, there is little chance of him returning to Jurgen Klopp’s first team Liverpool. As the club initially wanted to move to another Premier League club, they could instead explore a new loan.
