Report: Some members of Patriots brass ‘in shock’ over Bill Belichick decision

Rumors that Bill Belichick might be leaving as head coach of the New England Patriots had been swirling for months before Thursday’s news that the two sides were parting ways.

But when a relationship ends after 24 years, surprising reactions can occur. That appeared to be the case for some members of the Patriots Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, Mike Giardy of the Boston Sports Journal wrote on social media that “several employees” who spoke with Belichick after his departure were “disappointed” to hear the news. But Giardy added, “We expected a change to happen.”Answers to unanswered questions from fans, media and New England staff could come as soon as Thursday afternoon.

The Patriots will host an unprecedented media access session with Belichick and former owner Robert Kraft at noon. Kraft has owned the Patriots since 1994.

In January 2000, he was traded in the first round to the New York Jets to hire Belichick as the team’s head coach. Less than a month after Belichick was introduced as the Jets’ new head coach, he abruptly resigned.
