The Green Bay Packers made the decision everyone was expecting and fans were hoping for to fire defensive coordinator Joe Barry. The Packers’ strong postseason finish wasn’t enough to keep Barry’s job. Because the defensive unit was considered the weakest link in this talented group. A late season in which players like Tommy DeVito and Baker Mayfield had their best games of the season and completely collapsed against the lowly Carolina Panthers sealed Barry’s fate. After three years at the helm, the Packers defense has not improved significantly despite significant capital and investment. It was clear that change was needed, and Matt LaFleur and the office did not hesitate. Now it’s time to take a look at the candidates who could become Green Bay’s next defensive coordinator.
Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro EveroAfter Carolina fired Frank Reich, Evero was given the opportunity to take over as head coach of the Panthers. He is currently in talks with them, but the Packers DC vacancy could change things for the 43-year-old coach. Evero was on Green Bay DC’s 2021 draft list before the Packers hired Joe Barry. He may regret this decision now, but better late than never. Evero met with Matt LaFleur and the two coaches worked together at the Rams. With a full roster, the prospect of a Super Bowl appearance may be more enticing than Carolina’s head coach, so Evero remains a championship favorite. Patrick Graham, Raiders defensive coordinatorLike Evero, Patrick Graham could also be considered for head coaching this offseason as he is on the Seattle Seahawks short list. But if he doesn’t get the job, the Mariners should try to poach him. Graham has enjoyed surprising success as the Raiders defensive unit is 9th in points allowed and 8th in defensive DVOA. He previously served as quarterbacks coach and running backs coordinator under Mike Pattine in Green Bay. A possible front office and coaching change in Las Vegas could mean he could join the Packers.Wink Martindale, FAMartindale didn’t pan out on Brian Daboll’s staff in New York, but he remains one of the best defensive minds in football. His record prior to his time with the Giants speaks for itself, as he not only led the Baltimore Ravens to three consecutive top-10 defensive records, but also helped them win a Super Bowl.Earlier this season, LaFleur had nothing but positive things to say about Martindale, calling him “a guy who puts people in good situations and provides different challenges for the offense.” Martindale’s offensive scheme and flash could be just what this Packers defense needs to take them to the next level.Dallas Cowboys defensive backs coach Al HarrisPackers Hall of Famer and former Pro Bowl cornerback Al Harris has had similar success as an NFL coach. He gained valuable coaching experience with the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys over the past decade.Harris’ work at cornerback has drawn a lot of attention around the league. He was able to develop two of the league’s best quarterbacks in Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland, both of whom led the NFL in rushing at different times over the past few seasons.
Surely you’d expect less from a guy who’s been one of the best cornerbacks in the game for over a decade? The move to defensive coordinator would be a big step for Harris, but he’s certainly proven himself to be a worthy candidate. And switching from fan-hater Joe Berry to hometown favorite Harris would be a welcome change.
