Who is Scott Turner, and why do the Patriots see him as a potential offensive coordinator?

The list of potential New England Patriots offensive coordinators continues to shrink, with only six players appearing to remain in the running.

Among them is Scott Turner, currently an assistant coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. Turner, the son of former NFL coach Norv Turner, brings coaching experience. Why do the Patriots see him as a potential candidate to take over for their new offensive coordinator and play a big role in the development of their next franchise quarterback? Let’s explore.

Who is Scott Turner? Current Position: Game Coordinator for the Las Vegas RaidersAge: 41Player Background: After finishing his high school career at Oakton High School in Vienna, Turner joined UNLV as a linebacker. As a teammate of future NFL coach Shane Steichen, he primarily filled a backup role.

In three seasons with the Rebels, he attempted just 14 passes and completed five of them for a total of 43 yards. It seems that the professional game is not for him. Coaching experience: After leaving UNLV, Turner joined Oregon State as a graduate assistant in 2005. It was the first stop in a 19-year coaching career. He left the Beavers after one season to take a job as the offensive coordinator at South County High School in Lorton.

In two seasons, he helped the Stallions to a 12-9 record. In 2008, he returned to the college level as an assistant coach at Pittsburgh. He spent two seasons as an offensive assistant coach and another as a coach under head coach Dave Wannstedt and offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh (a former Patriots sophomore). Rotunda Defender – Frank Cignetti Jr.In 2011, Turner got his first opportunity in the NFL.

The Carolina Panthers, then first-year head coach Ron Rivera, hired him as the offensive quality control coach, a position he held for two years before leaving to join his father in Cleveland. He spent one season as the Browns’ wide receivers coach. Receiver coach. Before leaving to join the Minnesota Vikings with Norv in the 2014-2016 season. At Minnesota, Turner coached quarterbacks under his father and head coach Mike Zimmer.

In that role, he worked closely with first-round draft pick Teddy Bridgewater, who completed 64.9 passes for 6,150 yards with 28 tackles and 21 interceptions over two seasons (Bridgewater missed all of 2016 with a foot injury) .After the Vikings’ 8-8 season in 2016, both he and his father were released.

Norve sat out the 2017 season and Scott took a job as an offensive analyst at the University of Michigan under Jim Harbaugh. In 2018, Ron Rivera brought Turner back to the Panthers. He coached quarterbacks at Carolina for two seasons with his father as OC. When Turner Sr. and Rivera were fired during the 2019 season, Turner Jr. was named interim offensive coordinator.

The team averaged 15.0 points per game with him, compared to 23.3 points per game with his father. Turner also followed Rivera to Washington after a disastrous 2019 season in Carolina. He served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator for three seasons, overseeing a team that ranked 25th (20.9), 23rd (19.7) and 24th (18.9) in scoring and led most quarterbacks in eight starts.

He was fired after the 2022 season.Former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels hired him before the 2023 season to be Mick Lombardi’s running back in Las Vegas. The 8-9 Raiders, who fired McDaniels and Lombardi in early October, are 23rd in scoring, 20th in most key passing stats and 23rd in expected returns.

Why do the Patriots consider him a potential offensive coordinator? We reached out to Bill Williamson of SB Nation’s Raiders blog Silver and Black Pride to answer that question. Here’s what he told us about the Patriots coaching candidates. How do you rate Turner’s performance in Las Vegas? Turner has only been here for a year and it’s hard to gauge how he’s doing.

Josh McDaniels ran the show until he was fired and the offense didn’t look good. He improved slightly after McDaniels was fired, but was still inconsistent. Rookie Aidan O’Connell has improved considerably as the season has progressed, and his turnover rate has dipped since missing the last four games. It could be a huge blow for Turner.

But overall, it was an inconsistent season offensively. It’s also worth noting that the Raiders chose Beau Hardegree as their interim OC over Turner despite his inexperience. How will Raiders fans feel about seeing him go to New England in the first place? I don’t think Raiders fans would mind Turner leaving.

He was in a season and it was not good, so there was no big connection. The wholesale change of the attack staff was expected. What do you think makes Turner an attractive prospect for the Patriots? Candidate Turner is an NFL football fan. I don’t think it’s a terrible rental, but it might not be a great rental.
