The New England Patriots are halfway through their revamped organizational structure, hiring coach Jerod Mayo to replace Bill Belichick. However, they have yet to announce who will replace Belichick as general manager.
Even though Belichick has been with the franchise for four weeks, it appears that the search for a new general manager has been largely fruitless, according to a recent report from The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.”Coach Jerod Mayo began contacting candidates shortly after he was hired,” Howe wrote of the Patriots’ search. “It appears a new voice will be added to HR, but the role or position remains a mystery.
Internal candidates Eliot Wolff and Matt Groh have also been considered.”With the final part of the NFL draft evaluation process already underway and the Reese’s Senior Bowl and East-West Temple complete, where is the Patriots’ relevance? They seem content to let current director of scouting Eliot Wolff and director of player personnel Matt Groh continue to run the scouting department. Ultimately, as Howe reported, the two are in the running for a job that could make them the first full-time general managers the Patriots have had since the Bill Parcells era.
But if the Patriots are truly eager to add a “new voice” to their personnel department, why not position that person in time for free agency and the NFL draft?Procrastination has nothing to do with lack of interest. Howe noted that the general manager job in New England is “attractive.” The Patriots seem to be taking their time on the importance of hiring good talent.
