NFL free agency doesn’t start until next month, and this season’s Super Bowl hasn’t even been played yet. That means the Cleveland Browns have about 25 players on the free agent list. The NFL has a lot of roster turnover every year. When it comes to who to keep in Cleveland, a few players stand out.
LB Takitaki Shione
Takitaki has developed his game since being drafted by the Browns in 2019. In 2023, during the time of Anthony Walker Jr., Time Lapse Takitaki was worn with a green dot as a microphone. For most of his career, Takitaki was solely responsible for powerful sponsors, namely insurance. Now he has become a reliable defender who can play anywhere. Keeping Takitaki’s depth would be a huge win, but I wouldn’t mind him being the starting mic in 2024 alongside Anthony Walker Jr. As a free agent
D. T. Maurice Hirst
Hearst was one of the best stories of 2023, even if it didn’t end as expected. Hurst was Cleveland’s best infielder, appearing in the most games (13) in 2019. Hurst has not been consistent with the team in training camp and has had a significant injury history. He recorded 22 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception for the Browns. A torn pectoral muscle may have cut his season short, but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that he’s one of the NFL’s best depth players in 2023.
QB Joe Flacco
It’s absurd to believe that I wrote this six months ago. But here it is. I think it would be good for the Browns to bring back a veteran quarterback. Starting Dorian Thompson-Robinson as the primary backup in 2024 would have factored into how he played in 2023. Flacco turned the ball over too many times late in the season, but no quarterback on the roster made bigger plays. If there is a possibility that Flacco is a good check to be a bridge or backup quarterback somewhere, he should take it. Cleveland isn’t overpaying and neither are they. But if the stars align, many people would be happy to see him return to Cleveland.
