A Super Bowl championship won’t be returning to the home stadium of the New England Patriots anytime soon. However, the road to the real “World Cup” goes through Gillette Stadium in 2026.
The FIFA World Cup announced on Sunday afternoon that the Pats will host seven matches of the 2026 tournament, including the quarter-finals on July 9. The 2026 World Cup Final will be played on Sunday, July 19, at the MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.
This tournament will be hosted by North America, the games will also be held in Canada, and the opening ceremony will be held at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The two semifinals were held at AT&T Stadium in Dallas and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The international football tournament, held every four years, is the most watched sporting event in the world, with 104 matches played in 48 countries over the course of a month. The 2022 final between Argentina and France attracted 1.5 billion viewers. Last season’s Super Bowl game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles drew a relatively small 115 million.

It is the first time the World Cup will be held in the United States since the quarterfinals between Spain and Italy in Foxboro in 1994.The seven games are expected to attract 1 million visitors and have an economic impact of up to $500 million for Boston.
