The New England Patriots could have another prominent member of their new coaching staff.
The Patriots are in talks to add former New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo to Jerod Mayo’s coaching staff, according to a Monday morning report from quarterback Albert Breer. It’s not yet clear what role McAdoo will have, but Breer expects to be an assistant coach, assisting new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
McAdoo was the head coach of the Giants in the 2016 and 2017 seasons and compiled a 13-15 record before being fired at the end of the 2017 season. Before that, he was the Giants’ offensive coordinator. His last NFL job came in the 2022 season when he was the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.
He also spent time as quarterbacks coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars and as a consultant with the Dallas Cowboys.McAdoo’s New York offense ranks 13th and 6th, respectively, in scoring. He never had much success either as a head coach or during his one-year stay in Carolina, where he never finished higher than 20 in the NFL.
The Patriots will have to do something incredible to fix their offense. Not only did they rank 31st in the NFL in scoring going into the 2023 season, but they were the biggest reason they failed to double their wins.
There were at least three or four games on the schedule that could have easily been won by an average offense. With the addition of Van Pelt and possibly McAdoo, they are at least trying to solve the problem. Now they need to get the right quarterback position with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They should at least have a chance to select LSU’s Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels here.
