The Cleveland Browns will have a full offseason like any other NFL team. One of those decisions will be whether to pick up the fifth-year option on CB Greg Newsome II. Newsom was a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but his future may be somewhat uncertain.Cleveland, just entering its third season, has until May 2 to decide what to do with the fifth year. What should the Browns do with Nuso? Cleveland has three good corners, and Newsom is right in that mix. It’s not common in the NFL to have three cornerbacks of Cleveland’s caliber, so they have that advantage. But I don’t think Newsome falls into the first two of them. Denzel Ward and Martin Emerson Jr. Best for outdoor play.
The past two seasons, the Browns have played Newsome primarily in the slot. This is why Newsom is not getting paid as an outside cornerback in Cleveland. The Browns drafted Cameron Mitchell, a friend of Newsome’s, to add depth to the slot. Cleveland should consider trading Newsom if he is a player who can eventually land a full-time position. There will be teams moving to Newsome. It harmonizes well with the neural space and has versatility inside and outside. Finally, the Browns traded Emerson, L.B. Jeremiah has to pay Owusu-Koramoa and other players. It doesn’t make sense to sign Newsom to a very large contract. You have to save space somewhere. For example, if the Browns can take Newsome in the third round, that’s a move they should make.
Newsome scored in the first two games of 2023, including a touchdown performance against the Baltimore Ravens. He joined Cleveland, a player with an energy you don’t always see in a city that loves football so much. But the Brown family’s plan may be very simple. I chose the fifth course, but I would like to change it.
