The Green Bay Packers are wasting no time in finding their next president and CEO, even though Mark Murphy is slated to serve until July 2025.”Murphy will officially retire in July 2025 when he turns 70, the mandatory retirement age for his position as required by the organization’s bylaws,” Green Bay said Wednesday.A search committee has already been formed to fill the position and will be chaired by Packers executive vice president and CEO Susan Finko. The Vice Chair of the Recruiting Committee will be Dan Ariens, Secretary of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Personnel and Compensation Committee.”Mark’s contributions to the organization have been tremendous,” Finko said in a team statement.
“From renewing the company’s leadership structure, to growing and diversifying revenue, to expanding the Packers’ significant impact in the community, Mark continues to position the Packers for success. We look forward to his visionary leadership over the next year and a half.” I can not wait.”The search committee worked with national search firm Korn Ferry to identify Murphy to replace Bob Harlan in 2007. He is again working with the company on this search. The committee will complete its work within six to nine months and then present the confirmed candidates to the Board of Trustees for a vote. The selected individual will work with Murphy during the transition period.Murphy played defensive back in the NFL for Washington for eight seasons from 1977 to 1984. He was a Super Bowl champion, named to the Pro Bowl and first team All-Pro during the 1983 campaign and led the league with nine interceptions. He served as president and CEO of the Packers for the past 16 highly successful seasons. Green Bay has made the playoffs in 12 of 16 years and has maintained stability at the starting position under center Aaron Rodgers and two full-time coaches, Mike McCarthy and Matt LaFleur.
The Packers won the Super Bowl in Murphy’s third season and made five appearances in the NFC Championship Game. It will be difficult for the next president to replicate that consistency long term, but quarterback Jordan Love looks like a cornerstone of the franchise and the team will be headed for another postseason run.
