In a surprising development, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed during a press conference on Monday that the team is preparing for the departure of a key defensive player in the upcoming free agency period. While Tomlin refrained from naming the player directly, multiple reports suggest that linebacker Alex Highsmith, a pivotal contributor to the team’s pass rush, is expected to explore options on the open market.
Highsmith, who has been instrumental alongside T.J. Watt in creating one of the league’s most feared defensive fronts, is coming off a career-best season. With 12.5 sacks, multiple forced fumbles, and consistent backfield disruption, the 26-year-old has cemented himself as one of the top edge defenders in the NFL. However, his breakout performance has also made him a highly sought-after commodity.
“We value everything he has done for us and what he means to this defense,” Tomlin said. “But we understand this is a business, and sometimes difficult decisions have to be made.”
The Steelers are reportedly facing salary cap constraints, with significant portions of their budget already tied up in key players like Watt and quarterback Kenny Pickett. Highsmith’s projected market value—estimated to be in the range of $15–18 million per year—appears to be out of the Steelers’ price range.
Fans reacted with mixed emotions, with some lamenting the potential loss of such a key defender while others acknowledged the financial reality of keeping a stacked roster.
“Losing Highsmith hurts, but it’s hard to keep everyone in today’s NFL,” one fan wrote on social media. Another added, “If they let him go, they better draft or sign a serious replacement. Our defense needs to stay elite.”
The Steelers have historically excelled at developing defensive talent, so there is hope that the team can find a solution through the draft or internal options. Meanwhile, Highsmith is expected to draw heavy interest from teams in need of a dominant edge presence.
