Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made headlines this week after addressing wide receiver George Pickens’ behavior, stating that the talented pass-catcher “just gotta grow up” following two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during Pittsburgh’s 44-38 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
On Thursday, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith echoed similar sentiments, using his media availability to emphasize the importance of discipline on the field. “Ultimately, anybody that’s out there, you can’t do things that hurt the team,” Smith said, as reported by Steelers Depot’s Josh Carney. He acknowledged that every player is unique but stressed that actions detrimental to the team must be managed carefully.
Maturity concerns have lingered over Pickens since he was selected by Pittsburgh in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. This season alone, Pickens has been involved in multiple incidents, including a heated exchange with a coach during training camp, wearing a profane message on his eye black during a game, and grappling with Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II during a last-second Hail Mary attempt in Week 12.
Despite these challenges, Pickens has been a crucial piece of the Steelers’ offense. According to ESPN, he leads the team with 55 receptions, 90 targets, and 850 receiving yards, along with three touchdowns in 12 games. Smith noted that while Pickens plays with passion, it’s important to channel that energy positively. “The biggest problem I’ve had is with players who are naturally gifted but lack passion. Thankfully, we’ve got guys who love to play and put in the work,” Smith said, adding that recent practices have been some of the best he’s experienced.
As *The Athletic’s* Mike DeFabo pointed out, the Steelers face a tough decision in the future: whether to commit significant resources to Pickens or move on from another talented but inconsistent playmaker. For now, the focus remains on ensuring Pickens stays composed when Pittsburgh (9-3) hosts the Cleveland Browns (3-9) on Sunday.
DraftKings Sportsbook has the Steelers listed as 6.5-point favorites for the matchup.
