“Lions’ Defensive Woes Deepen as Dan Campbell Delivers Brutal Injury Update”

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has provided a discouraging update on defensive end John Cominsky’s recovery from a torn ACL. Despite initial hopes that Cominsky might return late in the 2024 season, Campbell all but ruled out that possibility with just a few games left.

“I think it’s unlikely. Man, he tried,” Campbell said during a press conference on Wednesday, as reported by MassLive’s Kory Woods. “He’s been in rehab and doing everything he can, but it’s been tough to get over the last hurdle. Those guys are doing a great job rehabbing him, but I think it’s unlikely.”

Cominsky, 29, suffered the devastating injury during training camp in July. Since joining the Lions in 2022 off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons, he has been a key contributor to Detroit’s defense. In his first season with the team, he recorded four sacks, 30 tackles, 12 quarterback hits, and a forced fumble across 14 games. His performance earned him a two-year, $8.5 million contract extension in 2023.

The following season, Cominsky tallied 36 tackles, eight quarterback hits, two sacks, and a pass defended over 16 games, including a career-high 11 starts. His consistent presence on the field made him a valuable part of Detroit’s defensive rotation.

This latest setback is another blow to a Lions defense that has been plagued by injuries. Despite these challenges, the team remains a powerhouse in the NFC, boasting a 12-2 record and sitting atop the NFC North. Detroit’s defense has been solid this season, ranking seventh in points allowed (20.1 per game) and 14th in total defense (335.8 yards per game).

The Lions are gearing up for their Week 16 matchup against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, hoping to maintain their strong position as the playoffs approach.
