Major Injury Shakeup Hits the Lions Ahead of Crucial Week 17 Matchup

With David Montgomery sidelined, the Detroit Lions have relied heavily on Jahmyr Gibbs to lead their running game. Montgomery is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season, leaving Gibbs as the primary back for Detroit’s final two games.

In his first game without Montgomery, a Week 16 win against Chicago, Gibbs impressed with 27 touches for 154 all-purpose yards. Despite the increased workload, Gibbs handled the responsibility well. The Lions also utilized Craig Reynolds, Jermar Jefferson, and Sione Vaki in specific situations, a rotation they plan to continue while Montgomery remains out.

Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson noted that the team is focused on balancing reps among the backs rather than total carries. He highlighted how Jefferson, Reynolds, and Vaki performed well in their roles, including Vaki’s contributions during a two-minute drive.

On the defensive side, rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold returned to practice in a limited capacity on Friday after missing Thursday due to illness.
